ASCENSION DU MONT GARBI
Annual 16 km commemorative walk. Open to all, but requires good physical condition.
On February 3, 1982, an aircraft accident occurred on the summit of Mount Garbi, 20 km north of Lake Assal and at an altitude of 1,695 m, resulting in the deaths of crew members, marine commandos and legionnaires on mission in Arta. Ali Liaquat, a young legionnaire at the time, had parachuted from the same plane a few days before the accident. Now in charge of the Hikers' House, Ali is the initiator of this annual 16 km commemorative walk. This ascent is open to all, but requires a good physical condition.
