Every year, Djibouti commemorates its independence on June 27, 1977, with festivities and a military parade.
Djibouti commemorates each year its independence acquired on June 27, 1977, at the end of a process that lasted about twenty years. Djibouti's accession to independence put an end to 300 years of French presence on the African continent. The former "Somali Coast", which became a French Overseas Territory (TOM) in 1958 and was renamed "French Territory of Afars and Issas" in 1967, remained the last French colony in Africa. Festivities and a military parade are held at the municipal stadium to commemorate this historic date.
