Soccer, the great popular sport
As everywhere on the African continent, soccer is the most popular sport in the country. Children and adults alike improvise fiery matches with minibuts on the beach or in the street. Otherwise, the major European soccer matches and international games are widely broadcast in the country's bars and, at the local level, the national team is obviously very popular. However, the "national Syli", the nickname of the national team, has struggled to make a real impact on the African and international soccer scene. It has never participated in a World Cup, but it has already played in the African Cup of Nations (CAN) several times. Its best result goes back to 1976 and a flamboyant finalist place against the Moroccan winner! The results have been duller thereafter, although the last few years have seen some nice performances such as quarter-finalist places in 2006, 2008 and 2015 and eighth-finalist places in 2019 and 2021. In this last edition organized in Cameroon, the selection will mark the spirits by beating the great Senegal in the group stage (1-0) to reach the eighth round of the continental competition before falling against the Gambia. Senegal will lift the cup a few days later ..
On land, some possibilities
Hiking. Walkers in search of nice walks or more demanding treks over several days will take the direction of the Fouta-Djalon region. With its countless possibilities in the middle of unique landscapes, the Fouta-Djalon is an unmissable escapade for all travelers visiting Guinea, and especially for the most athletic who will enjoy this massif which culminates at about 1,500 m of altitude with the mount Loura. It is also the cradle of large rivers (Gambia, Bafing) which give birth to superb waterfalls (Kambadaga, Ditinn, Sala) and deep valleys. It is therefore an ideal spot for hiking, especially between Labé and Dalaba and also around Kindia.
MOUNTAIN BIKING. Once again, it is in the region of Fouta-Djalon that thrill seekers will find an ideal terrain for mountain biking, especially between Fouta and lower Guinea. It is advisable to inquire with the agency Fouta Trekking Aventure.
And soon... Canyoning, rafting, climbing and rock-climbing are sports and activities that could well develop one day in view of the potential of certain Guinean spots. But for the moment, apart from some timid attempts (especially by expatriates), nothing is really set up yet. Business to follow!
Water sports on the islands of Loos
Notice to sport fishing enthusiasts! For those who would like to tease the fish (and the big one!), head to the islands of Loos, where the various professionals of the sector have taken their quarters to take tourists to enjoy the sea. You can get information on Roume Island (which is said to have been the model for Stevenson's novel Treasure Island) at the Villa Elijah-Guinea Fishing Camp or at the Conakry Fishing Club to organize great trips. These organizations also offer their visitors underwater fishing sessions and sea rides. Moreover, snorkeling enthusiasts should pack their fins, mask and snorkel. Otherwise, prepare your bathing suits and your sun cream and let's relax between two swims!
Dancers, on the dance floor!
Traveling in Guinea also means discovering and, why not, learning traditional dance. To the rhythmic sound of percussion, one learns to move to live a beautiful moment between sport and local culture. There are many courses and workshops in Conakry, but also in Upper Guinea and Lower Guinea.
