Annual festive ceremony, inspired by traditional culture, during which baby gorillas are given a name.
Kwita Izina, the naming ceremony for baby gorillas born in Volcanoes Park, is a popular national event. The gorillas are a treasure. The newborns are presented to the local communities, officially named and celebrated. Kwita Izina is based on a tradition in which Rwandans name their children in the presence of family and friends in a festive occasion. The festivities, which include traditional dance and music, take place at the foot of the Virunga Mountains near the town of Kinigi.
