Practical information : Eating out Ghana
Timetable
Most of the restaurants, maquis and more international restaurants, are generally open every day for lunch and dinner, sometimes without interruption between lunch and dinner.
Budget & Tips
You can eat well and at any price in Ghana. For 3 to 5 € on average, you can eat rice and chicken (or fish if there is one on the menu) in the typical roadside maquis. As soon as you go to the more upscale restaurants, especially in the capital, the bill can quickly go up one floor, that is to say around 10 to 20 €, to reach 40-50 € in the most chic addresses.
What costs extra
The price displayed on the menu is the price that should be paid. Neither water nor bread is included in the meal. If you wish to express your satisfaction with the service, you may leave a tip.
The local way
It is easy to taste African cuisine on the street side or in the maquis, small restaurants serving local food with loud music in the background. There is no shortage of choice in the capital and the rest of the country: restaurants serving different cuisines (African, European, Asian, Lebanese, Indian) as well as fast food and snack bars are plentiful.
To be avoided
When you eat local dishes without cutlery(fufu and banku in particular), be sure to bring your right hand to your mouth. A hygiene tip: avoid plain water in restaurants.
Kids
Children are welcome everywhere, in all restaurants and at all times. No special restrictions here.
Smokers
The vast majority of Ghanaian restaurants are non-smoking. However, if the restaurant has a terrace and you're not in the way, you may smoke. Ask the proprietors or service staff what rules apply in each case.
