The cafés are generally open from Monday to Saturday, from 7 am. After-works in bars are popular, especially during the early evening happy hours.
A natural fruit juice costs within 1 €. A little more for a tea, coffee, or cappuccino, in a specialized café. Cocktails (trago) and beer, even homemade (cerveza artesanal), are very affordable in Paraguay, between 2 and 5 €, a little more in "chuchis" (chic) clubs.
The civil majority in Paraguay is 18 years of age, but the consumption of alcohol is not permitted until the age of 20. Always carry a photocopy of your passport with you in case you are asked to prove your age.
Freshly squeezed fruit juices and homemade beer are readily available. But for a good coffee or tea, go to good restaurants or specialty cafés. It is not common to see the national drink tereré on a coffee or restaurant menu. The Café de Acá, in Asunción, is one of the few places offering it.
Cafés welcome children without any problem, even if they sell alcohol. There probably won't be a child's high chair to accommodate them, but we always manage.
It is often possible to smoke on the terraces of cafés and in open-air bars. If in doubt, ask the waiter.
