Practical information : Move & Laze around Paraguay
Budget & Tips
Many activities are possible for free or at very low prices. The most popular places to run in Asunción are the Costanera and some parks scattered around the city: Parque Carlos Antonio López, Parque Seminario, Parque de la Salud, Ñu Guasú... To ride around la Costanera, you can rent a self-service bicycle in one of the stations in the centre and in la Costanera (asuncion.gov.py/asu-bici). There are a lot of gyms, especially Crossfit, which has arrived in force in the last few years. Count around 20-30 000 Gs the day, 70-90 000 Gs the week, 170 to 200 000 Gs the month. The halls are generally open from Monday to Saturday, and also on Sundays in the shopping malls.
What's very local
Football is the national sport par excellence. And despite the heavy heat for much of the year, Paraguayans play it with the same passion as they support their clubs and the national team (the albijora), who defend themselves rather well in international competitions.
Your documents please
Some swimming pools or clubs may require you to have a medical certificate to play a sport. You can ask for it in public (free) or private hospitals (around 80-100 000 Gs).
To be booked
The two main options for obtaining a ticket for a football match are Ticketea (ticketea.com.py), for matches at the Manuel Ferreira stadium, and Red Uts (reduts.com.py), for matches at the General Pablo Rojas stadium ("la Nueva Olla"). One of the problems with Red Uts is that a national identity number (cédula) is required. It is therefore almost impossible to buy it without going through a dealer in front of the stadium. It's not really risky, but it's better to know the official prices so you don't get ripped off. Tickets are usually cheap, between €5 and €20 for a normal match. No problem, however, to buy a ticket to see the national team at the Defensores del Chaco stadium. Take your passport with you to a branch of Visión Banco, the official reseller (one seat per document presented, each seat is nominative).
Main events
Among the main sporting events in Paraguay, the Transchaco Rally attracts a lot of people during one week, along the Chaco tracks and in front of the screens of the sports bars broadcasting the race. Between 1971 and 2019, the car rally took place at the end of September, but the 2020 edition (and probably the following ones) will take place at the end of June. But long before the Transchaco Rally, the country's biggest sporting event remains the Superclásico, the football match that has pitted the country's two emblematic clubs, Olimpia and Cerro Porteño, against each other since 1913. These partidos take place four times a year, in the stadiums of Olimpia (Manuel Ferreira) or Cerro Porteño ("La Nueva Olla").
