Guesthouse means guesthouse but in the country this word has a much broader meaning. Most often a favourite meeting place for travellers on a tight budget, these establishments offer a variety of even cheaper forms of accommodation. You can find anything and everything in this category. There is a clear difference in price between rooms with ventilation - "  Fan  " - or air conditioning - "  A/C - Air Condition  " - with or without TV. Visit the room before settling down of course, especially the douches ! Dormitories are a good option for backpackers, and it's the perfect place to meet fellow travellers! A discount is sometimes granted when you plan to stay for a minimum of three days, provided you ask nicely

To be booked

It is necessary to make a reservation for major national holidays, such as Pi Mai Lao, but also for events in specific cities, such as the Vat Phou festival or the Sayaboury Elephant Festival. See the Festivities section of this guide for the different dates.

For food lovers

The breakfasts of the big hotels often offer buffets where Western breakfast (American, English, cereals, eggs, pastries ...) is combined with Lao breakfast, often exclusively salty (rice soup, curry ...).

Small establishments often offer only a basic continental breakfast (coffee, eggs, toast, fruit) or a basic Lao breakfast (noodle soup).

Smokers

Smoking is not permitted in hotels, but smoking areas are often located outside the hotel.

Tourist traps

Please note that several travellers have reported problems with the Internet room reservation websites. The owners of guesthouses and hotels often ask you to pay for the room on the spot, even if you have made the payment on the site. These misadventures occur most often in rural areas, not in large cities. So, scam or ignorance? When in doubt, it's best not to.
