This national holiday commemorates the events of 2 December 1975, the day on which the Lao Pathet announced the abolition of the monarchy and proclaimed the creation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic. It gives rise to several official ceremonies such as numerous parades and speeches, particularly in Vientiane, but also in Luang Prabang. The national flag and the communist flag with sickle and hammer are honoured in every town and village in the country. This day is a public holiday.
