Laos' Independence Day is celebrated on July 19, marking the autonomy, or independence, granted in 1949 by the French Union to the Lao kingdom. This day should not be confused with the national holiday of 2 December, the date on which the proclamation of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in 1975 is celebrated. Expect to see many flags, parades and speeches on Independence Day, but few public festivities.
