Chinese and Vietnamese New Year, also known as Lunar New Year, takes place between late January and early February. It marks the beginning of spring. It is celebrated in the Chinese and Vietnamese temples of Vientiane, where the festivities are at their most extravagant, Thakhek, Savannakhet and Pakse. Fireworks and firecracker explosions mark the festivities. Chinese- and Vietnamese-owned establishments are closed for three days.
