After three months of retreat, the monks are allowed to leave their pagoda. This celebration marks the end of Khao Phansa, the Buddhist Lent that began three months earlier. The population goes to the temples to offer the monks various offerings, gifts and dresses. Resumption of the marriage period. Traditionally, Boun Ok Phansa is also the period when the spirit of the Mekong is honoured. Buddhists believe that bad luck, illness and anything negative can be sent back to the waters of the river.
