Practical information : Accomodation Croatia
Budget & Tips
The seasonal nature of accommodation has a major impact on vacation budgets. Whether you're staying in a youth hostel or a 5-star hotel, the category and standard of accommodation also have an influence, but the price of a night's stay will not be the same if you're planning to leave at the beginning of June or the beginning of August.
Seasonal rental in a private apartment, from €40 per double room(sobe), studio from €50. For the whole apartment, the price varies according to the number of rooms, the season, the standing, from €65 (2 people), a house/villa from €140 per day (4 people).
A night in ahostel: from €20-30 per day per person, in dormitory formula. Hostels often offer double rooms, from €50.
3-star hotel: from €70 to €90 per double room (mid and off-season); from €120 to €150 (high tourist season) in the major cities on the Adriatic coast, on the islands and in Zagreb.
Camping: depending on category, tent pitches cost around €5 (low season), €10 and €20 (high season) per person per day. Motorhome pitches: between €15 and €25, bungalows around €50 to €60 per day.
To be booked
Like everywhere else, in the areas most frequented by tourists, those who book will be the best served. For hotels with breathtaking views of the sea, dream villas with swimming pools, luxurious seaside residences, apartments, studios or rooms in the historical center or fishermen's houses transformed into a "robinsonnade", mobile homes and bungalows in the best location in the campsite, you should plan to book as early as spring, especially if the stay is between July 15 and August 15.
What's very local
Croatia is certainly the country with the most private vacation rentals. Long before the Airbnb phenomenon, the traditional family pansion welcomed the tourist in a bed and breakfast formula. Today, all over the country, villas, houses, apartments, studios and rooms (all categories) are available for rent to tourists. Tourist offices and agencies have entire catalogs to offer you, not to mention reservation centers on the Internet. In general, cleaning is included in the price of the rental.
For food lovers
There's a big difference between a continental breakfast in a hotel or a traditional breakfast in the countryside. What remains the same is the importance attached to this morning meal.
On the coast, in tourist resorts or large cities, breakfast(dorucak) is offered as a buffet with bread, butter, jam, spread, milk and cereals, pastries as well as eggs, sausage or bacon, a slice of cold meats, cheese, yoghurt, fresh fruit, fruit juice, coffee from a cafetiere, tea and hot chocolate.
In rural areas, and the further north you go, the greater the proportion of savoury foods at breakfast. On the table: generous dishes of cold meats, smoked meats, cheese, omelettes and cereal bread. Fresh butter and jam are also served, especially rosehip jam, known as šipak džem or marmelada. It's also worth noting that the glassful of brandy(rakija) in morning coffee has not completely disappeared!
Smokers
Legislation is less strict in Croatia than in France, but more and more hotels or recent vacation residences prohibit smoking in the rooms and are equipped with smoke detectors. Owners of private vacation rentals are less careful.
Tourist traps
In bus stations, when leaving the bus, you may be greeted by people, often elderly, who hand you a business card. These are not really touts but the owners themselves who are trying to lure the customer without going through a tourist agency or a central reservation. The state of the rental has not been checked by a professional.
