The Luvale in Zambezi hold rites of passage to adulthood, the Wali for girls and the Likumbi Lya Mize for boys.
The Luvale live in Zambezi in the west of the country. During the rites of passage to adulthood, the Wali for young girls consists of isolation with instruction in domestic chores, fertility and sexuality by a spiritual guide chosen by their parents, the Chilombola. The initiation and circumcision ritual for boys (between 8 and 12 years old), the Likumbi Lya Mize, also consists of a 3-month isolation accompanied by Makishi masks representing the spirits of the ancestors.
