Everyone is invited to participate in the festivities celebrating the Independence of the Union of Myanmar, proclaimed on January 4, 1948. Political union remains, admittedly, to be invented, but the enthusiasm with which this event is celebrated is very soon contagious. Yangon's Equestrian Celebration - a demonstration of unprecedented patriotism - offers a unique opportunity to take part in local life. New Year Karen is also celebrated on January 12, while the Môn celebrate their national holiday in Mergui. The Kachin celebrate the festival of Manao, a great gathering of all the ethnic races of the state. Finally, many pagodas are celebrating during this month of the year: the offerings are flowing into temples and pwe are organized in the evening.
