On this day of national unity, the country remembers April 9, when 21 students were killed by the Soviet authorities.

This day commemorates April 9, 1989 (also known as the Tbilisi tragedy). During a peaceful anti-Soviet student demonstration on Tbilisi's Roustaveli Avenue, the Russian army went on a rampage, killing twenty people and wounding hundreds more. From then on, the movement became much more radical. The same day also marks the restoration of Georgia's independence, voted on April 9, 1991, through its separation from the former USSR.
