On this symbolic holiday, the republic remembers its 1st independence from Russia, proclaimed on May 26, 1918.
On 26 May 1918, Georgia freed itself from the Russian yoke, under which it had been under since 1801. The fledgling Republic declared its independence from what was then called the Federative Republic of Transcaucasia. This holiday was celebrated until 1922, when Georgia was integrated manu militari into the Soviet bloc. In 1991, the country finally regained its independence. It is therefore the national unity day, a holiday, commemorated by parades, fireworks and fairs.
