Day of Christ's birth for the Georgian Orthodox Church, historically based on the Julian calendar.
The day of Christ's birth is celebrated on January 7 in Georgia. The Georgian Orthodox Church historically followed the Julian calendar, while the Catholic Church followed the Gregorian calendar, resulting in a shift in the celebration of Christmas Day. Christmas festivities begin in December, however, and December 31 and January 1 remain highlights of the period. Another important tradition on this date in Georgia is the Alilo, which consists of a parade with costumes.
