As Christmas approaches, we take advantage of the Christmas markets, festivities that recreate the magic that enchants young and old alike.
Light is a central element in Latvian life. In December, it only gets light around 10 a.m. and night falls around 3 p.m... But in the darkness, candles, garlands and lamps shine from windows, Christmas trees and store windows. Christmas Eve is the longest night of the year. It signifies that the days will soon be getting longer, and in this spirit, we don't go to bed. We must savor the eternal cycle of nature, time and the new year. Nature is said to "turn the other way" just on this day.
