Two lively celebrations in quick succession: Independence Day on November 28, and Liberation Day the following day.
Albania has two national holidays. They take place on two successive days in the same month. November 28 is Independence Day (Dita e Pavarësisë), which was declared in Vlora on this day in 1912, after five centuries of Ottoman rule. The following day is Liberation Day (Dita e Çlirimit), marking the departure of the last German troops and the communist takeover in 1944. These two days are marked by concerts, fireworks and crowds of young people making the "sign of the eagle" with their hands.
