September 15 is a public holiday in Honduras because it commemorates the signing of the Act of Independence in 1821. Hondurans celebrate freedom from Spanish rule, which lasted for three centuries. It is celebrated by parades of schoolchildren and soldiers through every town and village in the country. The national flag is hoisted on all public buildings, schools and colleges throughout the month of Fiestas Patrias (September).
