The Honduras travel guide offers some tips for exploring this unique destination, which continues to attract new travelers, especially those attracted by ecotourism, and which is slowly but surely developing new hotel infrastructures. Between human encounters, exceptional natural sites, Mayan heritage, cigar culture and production of one of the best rums in the world, Honduras is one of those regions of the world where adventure is still allowed.

What to visit Honduras?

When to go to Honduras?

When to go to Honduras? This small Central American country has the highest number of visitors during the summer vacations in Europe, i.e. in July and August, but also during the Christmas holidays and in January and February, which are the months of school and university vacations. The best time to go to Honduras is during the dry season, from November to April. The climate is then very pleasant, even very hot on the Pacific side! The period of Semana Santa (week before Easter weekend) is a time of high tourist numbers and, as in January-February, hotel rates increase. From May to October, the rainy season is not necessarily to be avoided either, with showers generally lasting no more than a few hours, except perhaps from mid-September to the end of October (when the rains are abundant). In short, there is no wrong answer to the question of when to go to Honduras.

Weather all year round

The weather in Honduras is dependent on its tropical humid climate on the North Atlantic coast, tropical dry on the South Pacific coast, and tropical temperate in the highlands of the central regions. The dry season runs from November to April (temperatures in Honduras are very high as early as January), while the rainy season runs from May to November (avoid the month of October), with a brief summer episode of about 15 days in July, called el veranillo (the little summer).

Budget

Honduras is, along with Nicaragua, the cheapest country in Central America, although new luxury facilities have recently opened and some sites such as the Bay Islands in Honduras have taken on a certain tourist appeal, driving up prices. Accommodation, if it is attractive, is certainly the most expensive part of Honduras. On the other hand, you can eat very well for very little money. In general, you can get away with it.

Procedures

You do not need a visa to enter Honduras. A passport valid for six months after your arrival is sufficient. You will be allowed to travel for 30 days from the date of entry after paying an entry fee of approximately US$3. You will have to pay it again when leaving Honduras.

Health

There is no particular vaccine to be done before going to Honduras, except for the classic DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, poliomyelitis) and hepatitis A. For the rest, there is no health risk in Honduras other than a painful tourista, which can be avoided simply by not drinking the undrinkable tap water, and bad sunburns, which can be prevented by taking a tube of sun cream with you.

To travel to Honduras on your own, all you need is a plane ticket (about 700 to 900 € round trip from Europe) and to plan a little in advance the tour you want to follow, in order to book accommodation and entrance tickets for the desired tourist attractions. As far as safety is concerned, Honduras does not have a good reputation, but it is becoming increasingly safe. Avoid walking alone at night in the capital and you will be fine.

If you have little time, domestic flights are not very expensive, the San Pedro Sula/Tegucigalpa or Tegucigalpa/La Ceiba routes being quite popular. The plane is also an excellent way to reach the islands of the Bay or La Moskitia. You can also take the bus, which is preferable to renting a car, and in the cities, cabs are a cheap and safe way to get around. Cyclists will also be able to enjoy themselves on the roads of Honduras.
