Despite the summer holidays, it is out of the question for Moldovans to miss this national holiday commemorating the proclamation of Moldova's national independence from the Soviet Union on 27 August 1991. The atmosphere in the capital becomes very festive. Concerts are organized in the main square of Chișinău (the piața Marii Adunări Naționale). In other cities of the country this important day is also celebrated with parties and concerts. The festivities resume four days later for the Moldavian language festival on August 31.
