New Year's Eve is a time for lively celebrations with family and friends, both in the capital and in the rest of the country.
The New Year's celebration begins on December 31 and continues the next day. Groups of young people go down the streets reciting folk poetry that tells the adventures of Ștefan cel Mare or stories related to old agricultural practices (Plugurosul, the little plow). These traditional themes can be supplemented, depending on the fantasy of the authors. Despite their sometimes grating tone, these personalized poems are charming and are widely rewarded by the families visited. On New Year's Day and the following days, you will see other traditional events called Capra (the goat), Malanca and Cerbul (the reindeer). The representatives wear animal costumes and recite ancient poetry. The villages are more lively than the capital. In the city, concert halls organize traditional shows. The authorities also organize a New Year's celebration in the central square of the capital. For a festive evening, book in advance in the discotheques, they are sold out that evening. It should be noted that economic activity is slow between these dates, from January1 to January 14.
On January 7 and 8, for the Orthodox Christmas, groups of children go from house to house and sing carols for the birth of Christ. Around noon, it is the turn of the teenagers, and in the evening of the young adults. The evening meal is a family affair with a traditional home-cooked meal.
