Near Sofia, Strandja and Plovdiv, men in disguises and masks chase away homesickness with a frightening noise.
The International Surva Festival in Pernik kicks off the festivities at the end of January, followed by more intimate carnivals in February-March in the regions of Sofia, Strandja Mountain and Plovdiv. Disguised men chase evil away from their homes, making infernal noise and gesticulating beneath their scary masks. But it's all in fun! The festivities are linked to the god Dionysus and Christian Lent. However, the ritual is still alive and well, and taken very seriously in villages and families. An offering is made to the koukeri who knock on the door.
