An enduring rural festival, Saint-Dimitri marked the end of the harvest and the start of winter.
October's religious holidays culminate in St. Dimitri's Day on October 26 and St. Petka's Day on October 27. St. Dimitri honors the patron saint of winter and cold. It was a day for dismissing seasonal workers and making commitments for the coming year. Offerings of bouquets of white flowers were made. Livestock and farmland were prepared for the coming winter. As for Saint Petka the Bulgarian, she is one of the country's most venerated and popular saints, protector and patron saint of Bulgaria.
