February 14th is the winegrowers' festival, linked to the traditions of the vine. On that day, the vines are pruned all over the country.
In Bulgaria, on February 14, it's not Valentine's Day that's important, but rather Trifon Zarezan, the feast of Saint Trifon, according to the Gregorian calendar. This is the saint and therefore the feast of Wine and Winegrowers. And for barkeepers too. The origins of this festival, linked to winegrowing traditions, date back to Thracian times. To this day, the vines are pruned, and the winemakers, accompanied by their king of the year, go from house to house toasting and wishing the coming harvest fertility and abundance.
