Originally from the Kingdom of Benin, this celebration is linked to the culture of the Edo people, who in the New Year renew the powers of the Oba - Traditional Chief - while commemorating the deceased Oba. The festival, which is very colourful, usually takes place between Christmas and New Year's Day in Benin City, and sees Oba blessing its people and land for the upcoming new cycle.
