A fairy-tale period rich in traditions, especially that of the colinde, those Christmas carols sung from house to house.
Christmas is a time of great festivities in Romania, with its rich traditions and enchanting atmosphere. Children go from house to house singing colinde, the traditional carols of the season, sometimes accompanied by dancing. Special dishes such as sarmale and cozonac are prepared, and in the countryside, pigs are killed. Several cities host beautiful Christmas markets, including Sibiu, Bucharest, Cluj, Timișoara and Oradea. In Romania, Christmas is celebrated on two public holidays: the 25th and the 26th.
