At Epiphany, in some villages, men throw themselves into frozen water to bring back a cross blessed by a priest.

Epiphany(Bobotează in Romanian) is an important celebration in Romania: it is celebrated as a public holiday on January 6. On this special day, the priest blesses the waters (streams, rivers...). In some villages where traditions are still alive, men throw themselves into frozen water to bring to shore the cross that the priest has thrown in: the lucky winner is considered lucky for the coming year. It's a symbolic date that also marks the end of Christmas celebrations, when families get together for a big meal.
