Argentinian National Independence Day (el día de la Independencia Argentina) commemorates the signing of the country's Declaration of Independence from Spain. This was signed on July 9, 1816 at the Congress of San Miguel de Tucumán. Throughout the country, people gather and flags are raised to the sound of the Argentine anthem. This is the national holiday, not to be confused with May 25, another patriotic holiday celebrated in memory of the day on which Argentina's first free government, known as the Primera Junta, was established.
