Practical information : Move & Laze around Argentina
Budget & Tips
Most of the activities are accessible either on your own or as part of an organized trip, so it's not a big deal! Most of the time, if you want to take part in the cultural, sports and leisure activities that Argentina has to offer, you will only have to pay the entrance fee to the museum, park or reserve where you want to go. The rest is up to you. However, you should know that some activities cannot be improvised: in Patagonia, in particular, nature can be rebellious and hostile, so it is important to be a great connoisseur or to have someone accompany you to survey its smallest corners! For reasons of access, equipment and safety, activities such as rafting, canyoning, climbing, glacier trekking or volcano climbing are only accessible with a guide. This is where the tour agencies come into play, each one offering advantages: family tours, intimate atmosphere, bilingual guides, ecotours... you will have to study your desires and your conditions, no doubt you will find your happiness. As for whale watching on the Valdes peninsula, the excursion to the Salinas Grandes in Jujuy or the navigation on the Beagle Channel, do not hesitate to form a group with other tourists: the rates are degressive, the more people you have with you, the lower the prices!
What's very local
It all depends on the region and the season of course! However, a stay in an estancia remains a unique and immersive local experience, allowing you to discover the full extent of gaucho culture. Fishing trips, horseback riding, preparing an asado or shearing sheep, estancia tourism is becoming increasingly popular. In Patagonia, fishing is a local passion present in many hearts: you will fish with fly fishing or salmon casting. Fishing shops are easy to find so that you can get the best equipment and your fishing license
Your documents please
Most activities are accessible without prior requirements. However, for the Patagonian region, be aware that it is impossible to fish without a permit or licence, it could be very expensive to do so without authorization. In addition, catches remain highly regulated and not respecting quotas means taking the risk of losing your licence. For ascents and hikes above 3,000 metres, some agencies require a certificate, issued by a doctor, declaring you fit to practice sports activities at high altitude. In short, find out beforehand what the requirements are.
To be booked
Of course, it is always best to make reservations to avoid unpleasant surprises. In Buenos Aires, you can book your soccer game to play with the locals: book the day before for the next day is enough! The tango shows are obviously worth the detour and also require a prior reservation. Finally, some accesses, especially to the glaciers, are strongly regulated. Quotas of tourists are thus fixed to limit the environmental impact and to preserve the natural sites. Good news to fight against mass tourism, but bad news if you want to improvise your excursion: think of booking in high season
Main events
Every year the Argentine calendar is filled with cultural events and festivities take place all over Argentina. The Buenos Aires Book Fair, the International Festival of Independent Cinema and the Nuestros Caballos Festival punctuate the life of a capital that is always very lively. Elsewhere, celebrations are organised according to region and season: the opening of the whale watching season starts in May on the Valdes Peninsula, the longest night festival is held every 21st June in Ushuaia while the north of Argentina celebrates the Sun Festival to mark the winter solstice.
