What to visit Cuba?
Interview: My Cuba
By Martin Fouquet, traveler and author of the guide
After studying philosophy, Martin headed west: Latin America would be his first long journey. It was the one that gave him a taste for the unknown and for meeting new people. Europe, Africa, India, Asia, Russia, the United States... from trains to buses, from Airbus to cargo ships, he discovers the seven seas that magnetically carry him to the Caribbean: Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Cuba. Go West !

Timetable
Museums and cultural institutes in Havana, Santiago de Cuba and other major Cuban cities generally open from 9am and close around 5pm, or even a little later, depending on the establishment. Natural and urban sites are accessible at all hours.
To be booked
Prior reservation is required for guided tours (museums, neighborhoods, natural areas, etc.).
Budget & Tips
In general, monuments, remarkable residences and museums are freely accessible, and when they are not, you will be asked to pay between €1 and €10 maximum. Unfortunately, there are no cultural passes for Cuban museums and cultural sites, not even in Havana. However, some local agencies offer tours combining visits to several sites. Prices depend on the distance covered by your excursion. It's often transportation that costs money in Cuba. For a full day with a private cab, you can expect to pay around €60 for the cab alone.
Main events
If there's one country you naturally think of when you think of partying, Cuba is right up there with the rest. There are numerous events throughout the year. Whether in Havana or Santiago de Cuba, on the coast or inland, Cuba loves to dance to the lively sounds of orchestras. In addition to musical celebrations (Havana Jazz Festival, Santiago de Cuba Sound Festival) and carnivals (Havana, Santiago, Holguin...), there are film festivals (Festival of New French Cinema, Alternative Cinema, South American Cinema...) and cultural events (Havana Book Festival, Ibero-American Culture Festival), as well as national events commemorating historical episodes, which take place regularly, mainly in the capital.
Guided tours
In Cuba, while there are a few guided tours of museums and cultural centers (cigar factories in particular), the vast majority of tours focus on discovering towns and villages, as well as natural treasures: bays, protected areas, coastlines, islands, fields of crops and more.
Smokers
Smoking is generally prohibited in museums and other cultural institutions. As for open-air areas and natural spaces, it is the responsibility of smokers not to disturb non-smokers and to leave the areas clean. If Cubans do smoke, and cigars rather than cigarettes, it's an activity linked to a celebration or a moment of relaxation. So, outside bars, terraces, beaches and other entertainment venues, you won't see that many people smoking.
