Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Dominican Republic
Timetable
In Santo Domingo, as in the rest of the country, stores and boutiques are generally open from 8:30 a.m. to midday and from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. every day (some with uninterrupted lunchtimes), except Sundays.
Budget & Tips
Bargains are rarely found in the Dominican Republic's tourist centers. To get the best prices, especially on handicrafts, it's best to visit the country's villages. For cigars, it's best to go directly to the factories, and for everything food-related, ordinary supermarkets are still very good places to shop.
What's very local
It is difficult to leave the Dominican Republic without your bottle of rum or mamajuana (rum flavoured with cinnamon and ginger and supposed to cure all ills), your box of cigars, or your larimar or amber pendant. You will also be asked (at least several times a day!) to buy a Haitian art painting, of uneven quality, it's up to you...
Tourist traps
In the capital, as in the country's other tourist towns, we recommend that you beware of "guides" who offer to assist you with your purchases, as they charge a commission if they take you to certain handicraft stores, which is directly passed on to you in the price of your purchases.
