Independence was celebrated with great pomp and ceremony throughout the country. Shows, fairs and political speeches animate this day.

Popularly known as Boipuso, this national holiday commemorates the country's independence from Great Britain, achieved on 30 September 1966. Since then a stable democracy has been established and a president of the Republic of Botswana is elected every five years. Independence is celebrated with great pomp throughout the country with concerts, fairs, political speeches, picnics and fireworks. In Gaborone, the military marches through the capital, and the parade is followed by traditional dancers and singers.
