SEMANA SANTA

It is one of the most important events in Guatemala. Extraordinary events are organized, especially in Antigua.
Semana Santa is one of Guatemala's most important events, so much so that preparations begin months beforehand. More than a Christian symbol, the commemoration of Christ's Passion is a cultural syncretism, blending elements borrowed from the Spaniards and Mayans, such as alfombras. These huge, colorful carpets, with their varied motifs and representations ranging from still lifes to religious figures, are made in the streets from recycled materials, flowers, pine needles, fruit and vegetables. They are prepared during the night of Holy Thursday to Good Friday, and will be destroyed when the first procession passes early in the morning. It's therefore advisable to join the crowds as early as 5 a.m., especially if you're staying in Antigua. For, although countless events are organized throughout the country, those in the ancient capital are so impressive that they take on unparalleled proportions. Once Palm Sunday arrives, the city and its inhabitants live to the rhythm of the festivities.
On jubilant days, the curuchos - the faithful who do not belong to the clergy - don purple tunics as a sign of penitence. By the strength of their shoulders alone, they carry imposing platforms holding statues and relics from Antigua's major parish churches.
If you're planning to spend the week in Antigua, book your accommodation well in advance, and expect to pay up to 200% more than usual. And don't forget that Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Saturday are public holidays: the whole of Guatemala comes to a standstill.
