Piñatas and paper representing the devil are burned in large bonfires, in public and private spaces.
The Quema del Diablo - Devil's Fire - is a magical and religious event. Every year, on the eve of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción - the feast of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception - piñatas and paper representing the devil are burned in large bonfires, both in public and private spaces. By engaging in this form of spiritual cleansing, Guatemalans seek to rid themselves of the ills they have suffered during the past year in order to make room for the "good things" to come.
