Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Namibia
Timetable
Stores close at 6 p.m. on weekdays and at 12 p.m. on Saturdays: don't hang around, because here, time is time! On Sundays, everything is closed.
Budget & Tips
Locally-produced goods are very affordable, but imported goods are less so, due to Namibia's isolation and small market. Stores accept all major credit cards.
Sales
The sales periods are the same as in France: shortly after the festive season, then in June. Black Friday also applies in the country.
What's very local
The best place to buy local is the Himba market on Independence Avenue (next to the Hilton Hotel). It's an opportunity to familiarize yourself with the clothing customs of this north-western Bantu people. Another place, another atmosphere: the Green Market on Uhland Street, with its more Germanic ambience, also offers local products: cosmetics made from local essences, woven baskets, bracelets, fabrics... Don't hesitate to negotiate with the Himba, who are very tough on business. At the Green Market, however, price is price!
Tourist traps
Beware of counterfeits or products imported directly from China. The best thing to do is to ask the seller a few questions about the product's origin, and how it is made, to get some guarantees.
