Practical information : Accomodation Brazil
Budget & Tips
Accommodation prices vary considerably, depending on the range of establishments, of course, but also on the time of year or the proximity of events. During Carnival, New Year's Eve or Easter in places like Ouro Preto, prices can be multiplied by 2, 3 or 4. What's more, during these periods, customers are often required to book a "pacote", i.e. a certain minimum number of nights. Generally speaking, a bed in a dormitory costs between R$60 and R$80, while a double room in a relatively comfortable establishment such as the Regina or Rio Othon Palace costs between R$250 and R$400. For the magnificent Belmonte Copacabana Palace, you'll need to spend at least R$2,000. Prices can vary between high and low season. In low season, in cities where competition is strong (Foz de Iguaçu, for example), it's not incongruous to negotiate prices, especially if you pay in cash. All establishments generally accept payment by credit card.
To be booked
Needless to say, at certain times of the year, some venues are overbooked. For example, you'll need to book 6 months to a year in advance for Carnival, New Year's Day and special events. In high season in Paraty or Iguaçu, accommodation is often fully booked and prices are higher. If you don't plan ahead, you'll have to rethink your trip.
What's very local
Apartment rentals can be an interesting option for groups. Some online sites allow you to book apartments fairly securely. Airbnb also works quite well in Brazil. In the Amazon and Pantanal, it's always worth spending nights in lodges or fazendas, the price of which varies according to the services offered.
For food lovers
Overnight stays in Brazil generally include breakfast(café da manha). This first meal is often an adventure that allows you to discover local specialties. The multitude of fruits, fruit juices, sweet and savoury dishes gives a foretaste of the richness of local dishes. In Lençois, for example, at the aptly named Pousada da Géléia (jampousada ), breakfast provides an opportunity to sample a wide range of local delicacies. Pão de queijo, carambola, tapioca cakes... In some places, it really is a first meal.
Smokers
As in all enclosed public areas, smoking is prohibited in pousadas, hotels and youth hostels.
Tourist traps
For reasons of hygiene and safety, you should use reliable "networks" for your choice of accommodation (serious websites, tourist offices, reliable information...). Avoid touts who promise rooms or stays at far below market rates.
