Timetable

Establishments that cater mainly to tourists tend to follow international opening hours. In Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, for example, you can enjoy a drink as usual in a bar from dusk until 11pm or midnight, then head off to a club that closes in the early hours. In the countryside and in local gargotes, closing time will be much earlier.

Budget & Tips

Once again, prices will depend greatly on the establishment of your choice. It's quite possible to find bars in Phnom Penh whose prices are on a par with New York or Singapore. But if you go local, a good beer will only cost you a few coins.

Night transport

Think carefully about your strategy for getting back to your hotel or home... After 10pm, it becomes difficult to find public transport even in Phom Penh. In the busiest areas, tuk-tuk are parked near bar exits.

Age restrictions

You'll rarely be asked for your ID when entering a bar or club, unless you look really, really young... Legislation is fairly flexible in this area. However, it is forbidden to sell alcohol on election days. So you can really make a conscious choice.

What's very local

As at home, make sure you know the dress code, which changes depending on the establishment you choose. Generally speaking, though, you don't need to pack your suitcase with a jacket - casual is the order of the day in most bars and clubs.

Smokers

Smoking is not allowed in public places, and bars and nightclubs are no exception. However, there are smoking areas everywhere.

Tourist traps

Cambodia may be a safe country, but the nightlife attracts unscrupulous individuals. Never accept a drink from a stranger, keep your drink under surveillance, and protect your personal belongings.
