Highly contested, this holiday, which had been abolished after the 1993 elections, has been reinstated since the coup de force of Mr. Hun Sen in 1997. It is the date of the liberation of Phnom Penh by the Vietnamese troops in 1979. The problem is that while the Vietnamese did liberate them from the bloody Khmer Rouge dictatorship, they then occupied the country for ten years, imposing an orthodox Marxist regime that the population could have done without.
