Celebrating the independence of 1953, this date is commemorated by celebrations at the Independence Monument in Phnom Penh.
On November 9, 1953, France granted full independence to Cambodia, ending 90 years of protectorate. The event is commemorated by ceremonies at the Independence monument. Cambodians, like all people who once lived under the yoke of an occupying force, attach great importance to this historic date. Although it was followed by long years of civil war, independence celebrates the beginning of modern Cambodian history. Not to be missed if you are around at this time.
