The Royal Plowing Ceremony, celebrated in April or May, is the first of the traditional agrarian festivals. In the past, on the auspicious day determined by the astrologers, the king himself ploughed the first furrows in a sacred rice field in his capital, thus opening the ploughing period in the whole kingdom. Today, the plowing rite is performed by a man, designated as the King of Meakh, who drives the horse and plow, followed by a woman, the Queen Me Huor, who sows the best seeds. A rite followed by the entire peasant world.
