The Lantern Festival marks the end of the Chinese New Year festivities. Fifteen days after the first day of the New Year, the streets are lit by oiled rice paper lanterns. Often red, the color symbolizing happiness and prosperity, they are decorated with hand painted riddles. At the end of the procession, family members gather to try to solve the puzzles by eating yuanxiao, sweet sticky rice balls that symbolize the family's union. This holiday is also called the Little New Year.
