On August 31, in Kuala Lumpur, but also in all the cities of the country, festive parades are held to celebrate independence.

Malaysia's national holiday celebrates the country's independence in 1957 after years of British domination. Most celebrations are held in Merdeka Square (Independence Square), in the centre of Kuala Lumpur. It should be noted that there is also a Malaysia Day, which takes place on 16 September each year, to commemorate the formation of the Federation of Malaysia with the accession of Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore (expelled two years later).
