Practical information : Treat yourself (& others) Russia
Timetable
The usual shops open around 10am and never close before 8pm. For the big brands, it can easily be 9pm or 10pm. The usual closing day is Sunday, but many shops stay open. Supermarkets open from 8am and close around 10pm, and some stay open all night, as do many small grocery stores (even in the most remote villages).
Budget & Tips
The cost of daily living is in absolute terms lower in Russia than in Western countries, and so is the cost of food at the supermarket. Except, of course, for very refined products, the import of which in times of sanctions is, to say the least, complicated. In any case, it is better to consume locally, and as everywhere, the best way to do so is to shop in the market! Beware, they generally close at 5pm and are not necessarily open every day. But you will find good fresh products, local specialties and, for those interested, the only really cheap clothes in the country (and often very kitsch!). Some, like Izmaïlovo's in Moscow, specialize in selling souvenirs. So don't hesitate to negotiate prices if you buy several items.
What's very local
Beyond the traditional souvenirs (magnets, matriochkas, chapkas), it is just as nice to bring back small everyday objects, to prolong the pleasure once back home! Why not a good bottle of vodka with a jar of pickles? Take a trip to the flea market: vinyls, Soviet pins, RZhD cups, military medals... There's something for everyone.
Tourist traps
They are everywhere in the vicinity of tourist monuments, stands loaded with falsely Soviet chapkas and other t-shirts with Putin's effigy. It's really better to wait until you get to a specialized shop to buy your souvenirs or to the souvenir markets, where you'll be sure to bargain dry.
