Practical information : Going out Russia
Timetable
Nightclubs are usually open until at least 6am. The opening time varies according to the type of establishment: rather bar-box open in the early evening, with concerts, or rather club that is active on the strokes of 11pm to midnight.
Budget & Tips
Canned food (when paid for) is cheaper in Russia than in Europe. This varies according to the time of arrival and the line-up. But the "face-control" will be all the more severe... Be careful also with the price of the consos, which in certain very trendy and popular boxes of the "new Russians" climbs very quickly. For those who would like to avoid this hassle, the best way to soak up the joyful local atmosphere in Russia is to look at the concerts. Russians are fond of music and excellent at it. One can choose to go and see a well-known band playing in a big hall (the ticket will be cheaper than in Paris), prefer a jazz club, a piano bar, a rock scene, or even the basements where young punk bands are flourishing!
To be booked
Reservations will be mandatory for all "established" venues. Tickets can be purchased online or at the box office. The website www.afisha.ru/ will prove to be very useful: it functions as a diary listing all the events taking place in all the cities of Russia, and you can buy your ticket there.
Night transport
Public transport usually stops around midnight in Russia. Later, you will have to take a taxi or VTC, whose prices are more than reasonable.
Age restrictions
Unlike bars and restaurants, identity checks are carried out at the entrance to nightclubs, so you have to be 18 years old. As far as theatre, opera and ballet are concerned, the youngest ones can of course attend.
What's very local
Going to the theater of course! It is a great experience, cherished by all Russians, who are proud to belong to a nation of great playwrights. Moreover, even outside the Bolshoi, the theatres are generally sumptuous. However, avoid the "boulevard" plays, which are recognizable by their overly colourful posters. If you're afraid of the language barrier, choose an opera, ballet or symphony, but don't forget to dress up.
Smokers
As with restaurants and bars, smoking is not allowed inside nightclubs, but most of them have a smoking room, indoors but sometimes outdoors (a source of much suffering in winter).
