In Buryatia, as in Mongolia and China, the Lunar New Year (first moon of the year) is celebrated. The festivities lasted a whole month. Since 1990, the first day of the year has been a public holiday. In Buryat, this festival is called Tsagaan Sar, which means "white month". The festival is celebrated in the datsan and with the family. The New Year gift (khadak) must be white (silver). That month, white food dishes (milk, cream, cottage cheese, rice), pozy, etc. are prepared. Those who come to the house are invited to stay there for the whole month!
