Christmas is celebrated in Russia at the beginning of January because the old (Julian) calendar was two weeks behind the Gregorian calendar.
The old Russian calendar (Julian calendar, before 1917) was two weeks behind the calendar used in the West, which explains the date difference. Special celebrations are of course held in all the city's churches, but on this day the eyes of the people of St. Petersburg are particularly focused on the celebrations in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan and the Alexander Nevsky Lavra Monastery complex.
