The most celebrated holiday since the USSR made it the atheist alternative to Christmas: everybody out, and S Novim Godom!
The New Year is celebrated with concerts in the Palace Square and on the tip of Vasilyevsky Island in St. Petersburg, for example. This is when the Russians give each other presents and get together as a family. But, from 11pm, the desire to party takes over again and everyone goes out to celebrate the arrival of the New Year. You should be familiar with this evening's formula: "S Novim Godom! "(С Новым Годом in Cyrillic: "Happy New Year! " ).
